1. The Beginning – Silkworms and Cocoons

Every silk saree begins with the humble silkworm. These silkworms feed primarily on mulberry leaves and gradually spin delicate cocoons made of silk filament.

These cocoons are the source of natural silk, and the quality of the cocoon plays and important role in the quality of the final saree.

 

2. Reeling the Silk Threads

Once the cocoons are ready, they are carefully processed to unwind the long silk filaments.

Several fine filaments are combined to create a stronger silk thread suitable for weaving. This stage requires great precision to ensure the thread remains smooth, even, and durable.

 

3. Dyeing the Silk

The raw silk threads are then dyed in vibrant colours.

Whether it’s bridal red, emerald, royal blue, or elegant gold, the threads are immersed in specially prepared dyes to achieve rich, long – lasting colours.

After dying, the threads are thoroughly washed and dried before moving to the next stage.

 

4. Preparing the Loom

Before weaving begins, the dyed silk threads are arranged on a loom.

 This process, known as wrapping, ensures every thread is perfectly aligned according to the saree’s design. The border, body, and pallu are carefully planned before the first weave begins.

 

5.Weaving the Saree

This is where the true artistry comes to life.

Using traditional looms and years of experience, skilled weavers interlace thousands of silk threads to create the saree. Intricate borders, elegant motifs, and detailed pallus are woven with patience and precision.

Depending on the design, a single silk saree may take several days or even weeks to complete.

 

6. Creating the Zari work.

For many traditional silk sarees, especially Kanjivaram sarees, zari is woven into the fabric to create luxurious borders and motifs.

The shimmering zari adds richness and elegance, making the saree perfect for weddings, festivals, and grand celebrations.

 

7. Finishing and Quality Inspection

After weaving is complete, the saree undergoes careful finishing.

Loose threads are trimmed; the fabric is gently pressed and every detail-from the border to the pallu-is carefully inspected.

Only sarees that meet high standards of craftsmanship and quality are ready for customers.

 

8. From the Loom to New Sudarshan Silks

After all these procedures, sarees are carefully selected and brought into the New Sudarshan Silks.
